Aravalle River. Demolition of the Retuerta dam
The Retuerta dam (14 m high and 55 m long) was built in the 70’s to supply a housing development that was never carried out. In February 2013, after suffering sabotage in its drains, causing fish mortality both in the reservoir basin and downstream, it was demolished. Once the spring floods ended, in June 2013, on behalf of the Duero Basin Authority, Icthios began the program to monitor the evolution of the ecological status of the river both in the basin of the old reservoir and in its immediate surroundings. The program lasted for 4 years, during which macroinvertebrates revealed themselves as effective indicators of ecosystem evolution processes, presenting a rapid change in the composition and structure of the community towards the reference conditions.

Cofio River. Demolition of the Robledo de Chavela dam
On behalf of the Tajo Basin Authority, Icthios evaluated the effects of the river restoration actions carried out after the demolition of the Robledo de Chavela dam (Madrid, Spain) on the affected section of the Cofio river, both in terms of recovery of river continuity as well as the structure of the channel and the recovery of riverside vegetation. For this, a characterization of the river ecosystem was carried out considering water, habitat and riverbanks quality and macroinvertebrate and fish community, monitoring its evolution over 4 years.
